Regional data assimilation: results and experiences

This page is intended to share experiences with the assimilation of sounder data in regional data assimilation systems. Members involved in regional data assimilation are invited to contribute further relevant material.

Bias correction

A general overview about bias correction procedures for radiances can also be found on the NWP SAF pages.

Several studies have shown that the handling of radiance bias in case of limited area models differs from procedures used for global models. In a regional data assimilation system, Randriamampianina (2005) compared the use of bias correction coefficients estimated by a global model with those estimated using only regional model information. Further Randriamampianina et al. (2009) studied the impact of the way the bias correction coefficients are aggregated in an assimilation cycling process. Randriamampianina et al. (2011, QJRMS) reported the best way of aggregating the coefficients in case of variational bias correction schemes. We have tried to involved colleagues using other correction techniques for studying the suggested technique in other schemes, but without success so far.
